What to Do If Your Child Has Asthma

Statistics show that the number of children diagnosed with asthma is constantly increasing. It is unclear whether that actually reflects an increase in the number of cases or just higher awareness of the condition.

It might be that people are more and more concerned with their children's health and they respond more promptly to symptoms whose mild form would have been ignored twenty years ago. Specialists are of the opinion that there are still a lot of children with undiagnosed child asthma, simply because the first symptoms very often resemble those of less severe conditions.

Children's lifestyle might facilitate their proneness to viral infections, a very frequent cause of bronchial asthma. Viral infections can easily lead to inflammations of the bronchial membrane, which ultimately leads to child asthma.

If you notice any signs that can point to asthmatic problems, you should have your child examined by a doctor as soon as possible. If treated in time, there are chances that disease might be cured - not immediately, but the risk of attacks during adolescence and adulthood can be significantly lower, or even disappear in some cases. The doctor will look at the child's medical history, to see if any of the past ilnesses have symptoms similar to those of asthma. A series of tests are normally performed before a diagnosis is established and a suitable medical treatment is prescribed.

Besides following the treatment, it is important to also pay attention to the environment in which the child lives. You should avoid smoking around the child - though even if you only smoke outside the house, residual smoke from your clothes and hair can still be harmful to your child. Make sure there is no excess humidity in the home and that there are no cockroaches. Ask your doctor for any other measures you can take to prevent your child's condition from becoming severe.
