Can You Treat Asthma?

If you ask people questions about asthma treatment, you might get widely opposing answers. Some will tell you there is no treatment, others will point out that there is a great variety of medicines available. This is one of the rare cases in which the truth is not in the middle: there is, indeed, no treatment that can be trusted to cure asthma and prevent a return of the condition; on the other hand, there are quite a lot of medications that can make the symptoms less severe and even less frequent.

"Different" medications do not just mean that they come from different manufacturers. It means their content, way of operation, potential side effects and degree of efficiency differ a great deal. This difference is motivated by the very low similarity between patients. It is, therefore, obvious that you should not choose the asthma medication by yourself. You should consult a physician from the first symptoms you notice, so that they can identify the defining characteristics of your condition and recommend the most suitable treatment.

The doctor will probably prescribe some kind of inhaler to you. An inhaler is a small apparatus containing asthma medication that allows you to inhale that medication. This is what makes inhalers very effective compared with most other kinds of medication. Since an inhaler allows the asthma medication to be administered by inhalation, the substances that can alleviate your condition are given a direct passageway to your lungs, which significantly speeds up their relieving effect. Most of the times, the inhaler is recommended at the onset of an asthma attack and it is normally not used as a constant treatment. Apart from inhalants, there are many pills and even injectable asthma medications that your doctor might prescribe.

There are also things you can do yourself to make the attacks less frequent. For instance, if you know what causes your condition and, if you've been to the doctor, chances are youve already established at least one possible cause. You can change your lifestyle so as to avoid those factors.

Remember, asthma can be controlled. You just have to treat it the right way.
