Sports and Asthma

One of the many different causes that can lead to asthma is physical effort. Aerobic exercise, for instance, has been known to cause asthma attacks - even sessions as short as a few minutes can generate the manifestations of asthmatic symptoms. If the signs are not very strong, there is the danger that people may be unaware of the problem and overlook it. Since it is actually quite natural for the body to feel tired after a workout, it often happens that people just dismiss any worries by adopting the default assumption that they are simply not fit enough. If this happens, there is the danger that their condition may become more serious, which also makes it more difficult to treat.

The symptoms themselves do not vary so much depending on the type of asthma. People with exercise-induced asthma usually show the same symptoms as those whose attacks are caused by some allergen. Breathing difficulty, wheezing, coughing and a sensation of tightness in the chest are signs that should not be ignored.

The reason that asthma caused by exercising is difficult to detect is that, in its mild forms, it also resembles the body's natural response to overexertion. Nevertheless, statistics show that exercised induced asthma is a very common type of asthma. Some studies even found a higher percentage of this type than that of allergic asthma. Therefore, if you experience such symptoms after a workout session, you should consider talking with your doctor about it - especially if they body takes a long time to recover and feel fit again.

It may be that not all kinds of physical activity trigger an asthmatic attack. For instance, anaerobic exercise such as weightlifting, which influences and is influenced by the body's oxygen intake, are often less susceptible of leading to an asthma attack than aerobic exercise.

The important thing is that you should be aware of the problem, if there is one. Chances are you can avoid future attacks and still keep fit by simply changing the type of sports that you practice.
