Treating Asthma

As there are many different types of asthmatic conditions, it is logical that there should also be various kinds of medicines available for their treatment. Asthma medication can be used both not only for alleviating the symptoms, but also when placing an asthma diagnosis.

When your doctor suspects that you may suffer from asthma, your doctor will normally prescribe an asthma medication to test your response to them. If your condition improves after taking the asthma medication, it can easily be concluded that the symptoms you are experiencing are indeed indicative of asthma.

Inhalers are the most widely used asthma medications. A more complicated name for them is bronchodilators. Inhalers are actually an apparatus for administering medications in inhalation. There are several advantages to using inhalers. First of all, inhalers are comfortable to use. The apparatus allows you to breathe in the right dosage of the medicine.

Second, the relief that inhalers provide is pretty much instant, since inhalers allow the medication to reach the airways directly, unlike pills and injections.

The medications contained inside the inhaler vary depending on each patient's particular type of asthma. Salbutamol, terbutaline and bitolterol are among the drugs commonly contained in inhalers. These are newer drugs. Of the older ones, we could mention ephedrine tablets and epinephrine, which can be contained in inhalers. Ipratropium bromide, with its fewer potential side effects, is another drug that may be prescribed to you.

Still, side effects do exist. To avoid unpleasant conditions, you should only take asthma medication prescribed by your doctor. Taking the wrong asthma medication can have serious undesired results and even be hazardous to your life. In other words, if you've forgotten to bring your inhaler, you should not use someone else's that might be available.

It can sometimes take a while before the doctor can determine the suitable asthma medication for you, as there are many aspects connected with asthma that are less obvious. Sometimes, several different asthma medication need to be tested before a conclusion can be drawn. But once the right asthma medication has been identified, you should stick to it, so that you can avoid problems in the future.
